Becoming Vegetarian Or Vegan – 4 Health Reasons
The best way to gain your health back is by becoming a vegetarian or vegan. Think back to when you were a child. Do you remember having endless energy? It would be great to feel that good again. How about losing some unwanted pounds at the same time?
Then a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet just might be the answer for you. It certainly is for more and more American adults.
Are you wondering if you can go on a vegetarian or vegan diet? Wonder if it is even a healthy diet? I remember being at the same crossroads about 2 years ago. So, I did some research to see if it was for me.
Let us explore some reasons together and then you decide for yourself.
1. Cancer Prevention – a plant-based diet is rich in cancer-fighting substances called phyto-chemicals. Studies have shown a definite reduction in certain types of cancers such as breast cancer, prostrate, ovarian, colon and lung cancer.
2. Lower Blood Pressure – studies have shown vegetarians to have lower blood pressure than meat-eaters. When meat is added to a vegetarian diet, blood pressure rises.
3. A Healthy Heart – replacing animal protein with plant protein lowers blood cholesterol levels.
4. Diabetes – current studies have found that in order to control diabetes, foods low in fat and high in fiber and complex carbohydrates is what is needed. Thus a vegetarian or a vegan diet is the best choice.
Are you beginning to see the health benefits to transitioning to a vegetarian or vegan diet? Still think you cannot give up your favorite foods? What if you did not have to? Well, you do not, all you need to do is just substitute them.
That is right, imagine eating some of your favorite meals, only substituting some of the ingredients.
Here are some examples:
o vegetarian “tuna” salad sandwiches
o vegetarian Italian “sausage” with onion and green peppers
o vegetarian “crab” cakes with horseradish sauce
o vegetarian “ribs” with corn-on-the-cob and baked potatoes
o spaghetti with vegetarian “meatballs”
I bet you are thinking…”yeah, but those meals probably taste awful!” You know what? If we were talking about substituting ingredients 10 years ago, you would be right. But now, you will be pleasantly surprised.
With more and more demands for substitution foods to taste like the real thing, times have changed for the better.
Here are some substitute dairy products where the flavor and texture will amaze you:
o butter
o sour cream
o milk (plain and chocolate)
o cream cheese
o cheddar cheese
o mozzarella cheese
o parmesan cheese
At this point, you may ask, is a vegetarian and especially a vegan diet a healthy one? Well, my research amazed me. You would be surprised to know that it is not the amount of protein or calcium you should be concerned with, as much as, the quality.
Fortunately, you will pleased to know that all the quality you need is in vegetables, legumes (beans, peas and lentils), grains, fruit and tofu. The programming we have received, have made us think that animal products are the only way to get what we need in our diet. That programming is fast becoming a thing of the past.
